This is Sky Harbor Airport, just west of the subdivision I grew up in, in Northbrook. szasz once mentioned the existance of a VOR called "Northbrook" (a VOR is an aviation navigation aid,) but I knew no such thing existed in town. It turns out, it's actually up in Vernon Hills. If I had to guess, perhaps the VOR was originally located on or near the old airport, and was moved when the airport closed in 1972.

That article has a recent aerial photo of the industrial park that Arthur Rubloff's development company built on the site in the 70s and 80s. During my middle childhood, about half of the land along Anthony Trail was not yet developed. (Rubloff "For Sale or Lease--Build To Suit" signs dotted the vacant lots, however.) I and a couple of the neighbor kids used to ride our bikes down dirt trails (cut by older kids on minibikes) leading through the trees from Anthony Trail. Well into the 1980s segments of Runway 18/36 were still there, albeit overgrown with weeds and illegally-dumped junk.
