Say whatever the fuck you like, Jesus doesn't care - Jason Lindquist
Idle ramblings of an idle mind
Say whatever the fuck you like, Jesus doesn't care
I had already heard of Seattle's "cussing preacher", Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church. What I had not heard is that he's a Calvinist. Remember that from US History? The philosophy of French-born Reformation writer John Calvin, beloved of the Puritans and the Huguenots, who said that what you do on earth means nothing to God, that everyone is predestined whether they're bound for heaven or hell, since the beginning of time?

I thought that was a long-abandoned belief. Clearly not...

Wait..does not compute

So, if its all predestined, and it doesn't matter what I do on Earth. Why go to Church or anything like that at all?

That's what I always thought. Nobody in my history classes ever had an answer for that. And if it was an outdated religious principle, what did it matter, anyways? I'd bet if you asked this clown, you'd get an equally faulty answer.

Re: Wait..does not compute

yeah, he's pretty much like an religiose version of a frat boy douche nozzle--all pushy and aggressive and appealing to the douchehound borderline misogynist young male demographic. He's also really big on complementarianism... which works out well for him being male and getting to be in charge.

Again, a lot of young people flock to his church, which, hey, god bless. But it'll be interesting to see how his simple, absolute theology works, or doesn't, for them when they have to deal with the ambiguity and complexity of real life and real problems.

It's funny. I had a strong rebellion and criticism of Catholicism in high school/college. It wasn't until I moved out here and started meeting and hearing more from non-denominational fundies that I realize that many of the Catholics and mainline Protestants are fucking sane compared to guys like Driscoll.

Actual Mainline churches seem to have this pragmatic "separation of church and real life/home" that the fundies don't. Keeping people from being all Jesus/God all the time keeps them from becoming fucking insane.
