Things that actually amaze me - Jason Lindquist

Things that actually amaze me
WSSY was a radio station on the fringe of Northbrook on 1330 AM. Technically licensed to Evanston, their whole operation was in a converted house across Dundee Rd from the Sanders Court shopping plaza, wedged up against the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to the west. In the '90s, it became home to a truckload of cell towers. I assumed, after all these years, that the radio station had gone silent, and the only reason the towers hadn't been torn down and the land developed was the presence of all the cellular and (I assume) commercial repeater systems on the site.

It turns out I'm wrong. Now WKTA (actually, they got that call in 1990,) it broadcasts a lot of ethnic programming. Daytime, it's 5 kW directional tight to the east. At night, it's 17 W omni. SEVENTEEN WATTS! But wait! They've got a construction permit! They're building (or have built?) two more towers (giving them six!) to go directional widely south, and up their power to a whopping 52 watts. They'll be competing with the lightbulb on the front porch!
