Another day, another judicial disgrace - Jason Lindquist
Idle ramblings of an idle mind
Another day, another judicial disgrace
So what happens if you live in Bum Fuck Egypt, Ohio, and you pull a stupid prank that causes a car wreck putting two other teenage boys in the hospital with serious injuries, one of whom includes brain damage?

You get to play football before you go to juvie.

Bullshit. You fucked up. You fucked somebody over. You lose. Your team suffers because of it? Tough. You let them down. It's all on you. There's positive things about being the BMOC quarterback? Too bad, you pissed away your chance when you almost killed somebody.

Wow. That was actually pretty infuriating. A 60 day sentence and a 500 word essay in exchange for handicapping a couple people for life? Yeah.

Coming from a town in BFE Central Illinois with 2700 people where football was the end-all/be-all ... I can, sadly, attest that this disturbing mentality is alive and well. Does it infuriate the hell out of me - hell yes! Do I think the ruling was utterly disgusting - OH YEAH. Do I think these 2 kids, and whoever else was involved, should get an actual serious consequence for their action - Umm, YEAH!

That being said, I can tell you with 100% absolute certainty that if this happened in our town, the coach would have said, "Ok, no problem. You will show up to all practices, you will bust your ass, and you will sit on the bench for each and every game - PERIOD." He would not have cared what the town said or what parents said. He would not have cared if this was a Sr. year and there were scouts - you did something HORRENDOUS and there would be a consequence even if he had to dish that consequence out himself. I know this because our coach DID this. He benched the ENTIRE first (and most of the 2nd) string players. We had freshman out there playing in the semi-finals to the State Championship because the "benched" had been guilty of going out and having a bonfire party in the middle of a field with alcohol and getting drunk off their asses and then proceeded to try to drive home. The cops were called, they were held and then released - no tickets, no warnings, no hearing - nothing - all because they were football players from our school and the kids/friends of the kids of an influential family. Coach then benched their sorry asses for the entirety of the rest of the season and reminded them that was THEIR faults for being stupid - they were a team and even if they were sitting on the bench, they had just as much (if not more) a part in losing the game as the boys out there busting their butts. We were, however, lucky enough to have a coach who would tell people to screw off because his first priority was to help mold and shape these boys into RESPONSIBLE adults and he took his job seriously. He was a great coach!
