Things that make you go hmmm - Jason Lindquist
Idle ramblings of an idle mind
Things that make you go hmmm
There is a photo frequently mailed around by noisy Christians. The psychochristians will wave it as proof that God intends the US as a "Christian nation". It pisses me off. I could raise a pirate flag the same way and get the same effect, as long as the fabric is woven perpendicularly, and I pick the angle towards the sun correctly. It's proof of nothing, just coincidence or clever photo composition.

Because, you know those same people will not admit that if they're right, then this story must be proof that God hates Mexican children.

Current Mood: amused

I *really* hope that was a freak happening. I would hate to think anyone was foolish enough to deliberately hang out around a large metal object during a potential thunderstorm.

Some friends of mine were playing a baseball game the summer before our senior year of high school. Where they were at in Winnetka, there was no cloud cover overhead. (The clouds were over *my* head, on a different field five or six miles away in Northbrook.) Despite the lack of clouds, lightning struck a tree a couple hundred feet off their field. The root system was pretty pervasive, and extended across the field. The strike killed the opposing shortstop and second baseman, and knocked the rest of the infielders ass-over-teakettle. One of my friends was his team's second baseman. Scared the hell out of me to hear about that. (I can only find reference to one of the boys killed, Jeff Richards of Skokie. It happened the week of July 22, 1991.) Shit can happen...
