The show-me sport

Today's Union-Tribune ran an article today about a new requirement for high school wrestling that California is adopting a year early. It's yet another step to stop the rampant unhealthy practice of cutting weight. All athletes will be biochemically assessed to determine their minimum safe body weight. Since the common techniques involve rapid, severe dehydration, the tests focus on that.

Vista HS head coach Chris Davis has a laughable comment about this: "I like the side of it that teaches kids about health and nutrition, but I think wrestling is unfairly being singled out, I don't know another sport that has to go through something like this to let kids play."

Yeah, well I don't know another sport that has this problem. For no other sport is an athlete's weight immediately prior to competition so critical.
