At long last, WGBK-FM is streaming over the Internets. Friday's game (like tonight's game before it) will be on live... at 5:30 PST. Unfortunately, I have a basketball banquet to attend at 6. I want to hear that game, dammit...
I'm in luck. mplayer handles RealMedia streams. And yes, media is neccessary... they stream still graphics images over the audio. mencoder converts the audio to MP3, the video to throwaway low-bitrate MJPEG, and then another trip through mplayer strips the video and leaves the raw MP3 file, and at incredible space savings... a 30-second sample of the Real stream came in at 5 meg. The resulting MP3 file was only 232 K. Admittedly, I stripped it down to mono, but still, what a waste of bandwidth!
Here's the conversion process...
mplayer -noframedrop -dumpfile wgbk-050308b.rm -dumpstream rtsp://wgbk-north.glenbrook.k12.il.us/br oadcast/radio.rm
