Enterprise Bridge

(no subject)

Finally sold my old car yesterday. I really think it's worth $3000, but nobody was willing to pay that much, so I had to take considerably less. Add in the year and a half I had to keep it on the insurance, plus the registration renewal, and I got less than if I'd accepted the dealer's $1200 trade-in offer. (If I'd gotten off my ass and been more aggressive about selling it a year and a half ago, I would've wound up with more, but there we are.)

It's gone, it's gone to someone who was excited to buy it, who'll take good care of it, and it keeps my neighbors from trying to have it towed every once in a while. (And me from having to jump-start it after leaving it undriven for a week or two at a time.)

TiVo->DVD Round 2, coming up...

It looks like I'm due for an update to my TiVo->DVD writeup. Henry has updated Sizzle, but I couldn't get it to use the already-multiplexed-for-DVD MPEG files that TyStudio delivers. So I learned to call dvdauthor directly. I produced a beautiful disc of the last two episodes of The West Wing. It's just the two episodes back-to-back with no frills, but reading the documentation on dvdauthor, it looks like it wouldn't at all be hard to create menus, too.

Oh shit, they're releasing the first two seasons of Homicide on DVD tomorrow, too...

I learned this weekend that David Westerfield and Scott Peterson both lived (at different times) in the same neighborhood in Poway. Wonder if there's something in the water up there?

The big winner in this year's Cannes film festival is Gus Van Sant's Elephant, another look at the whole school shooting fiasco-fest. He shot it in Portland (two hours' drive from Springfield,) using unknowns, using significant amounts of improv. (There's bits of commentary about it from people in it over in damnportlanders.) I'm curious to see it, given my interest in those events. The first criticism that landed in IMDB was very uncomplimentary. Maybe it's accurate (by all reports, this year's Cannes crop sucked ass,) maybe it's not. Reminds me, I still haven't seen Bowling For Columbine yet either...
