Former Illinois senator Paul Simon died today at 75.

He was a good man who I think used his time in the legislatures to honestly try to make the world a better place. I didn't always agree with his politics, but I saw benefits from some of them. College financial aid got a lot easier to deal with when the direct student loan program he championed passed, replacing the old Stafford Loan program which guaranteed loans from commercial banks. And you gotta figure that a guy who can get elected statewide in Illinois, in spite of his dorky bow ties and lacking a slick demeanor, has to be doing something right.
